Start with what the number represents

Nearly every wrong conversion comes from a convention nobody stated: a US gallon read as an imperial one, decimal MB compared against binary MiB, or cups turned into grams without an ingredient density. Identify what the value measures, then settle the convention before reading the result.

Convert data storage and fuel economy only after choosing the convention and direction.

KB and KiB use different bases; US and UK gallons differ; L/100 km reverses the usual higher-is-better direction.

A conversion is only as clear as its unit convention

These 11 tools cover physical measurements, technical conventions, reference charts, and number notation. Conversion arithmetic can be correct while a result is still misleading if the source unit, convention, or precision is wrong. Keep those labels with every result and verify manufacturer or governing specifications when the task is consequential.

Keep the source value, source unit, destination unit, convention, and sensible precision together. A correct number without those labels is easy to misuse.

Before you convert

A source and precision checklist

  • Write the unit beside the source value

    A bare number cannot distinguish metres from feet, kilograms from pounds, or bits from bytes.

  • Choose the governing convention

    Resolve US versus UK volume, SI versus IEC storage, and regional sizing before converting.

  • Match precision to the input

    Do not present six decimal places when the original measurement was estimated to the nearest whole unit.

  • Keep direction visible

    Fuel economy and reciprocal conversions are easier to misread; label both the source and destination units.

  • Verify high-stakes specifications

    Engineering, medical, dosing, legal, trade, and purchasing decisions should be checked against the governing standard or manufacturer data.

Terms that change the answer

Four distinctions worth checking

Exact factor and rounded result
A factor can be defined exactly while the displayed decimal is rounded. The display precision should not be mistaken for measurement certainty.
Mass and weight
Everyday converters commonly label kilograms and pounds as weight, but they are units of mass; force depends on gravity.
Decimal and binary storage
Decimal prefixes use powers of 1000 (GB); IEC binary prefixes use powers of 1024 (GiB). The values are related but not interchangeable labels.
US and imperial gallon
The US liquid gallon is 3.785411784 litres; the imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres, so the same MPG number describes different efficiency.

What these converters cannot guarantee

They cannot improve the precision of a rough source measurement, identify an unlabeled unit, choose the governing industry standard, guarantee apparel fit, or replace ingredient density, manufacturer, engineering, medical, dosing, legal, or trade specifications. Use the result as arithmetic, then verify the convention that governs the real task.
